Destined for what exactly…
destined for greatness. if you’re breathing on this earth, you have heard this phrase. okay that may be a tad naive as i think of cultures rooted across the world, nestled deep in the jungle, or across a desert plane.
either way it’s not an uncommon phrase.
i cannot deny that i have fell into the “in group” of believing this lie. yes, a lie.
as i write those words, i can’t help but think about how cynical that sounds. how gloomy. how dark. how unpleasant.
but i am a christian and my faith is rooted in the bible. not only is my faith rooted in the bible, but my truth is also rooted in the bible.
i felt like i had to put this into the world because if i didn’t know the truth then i would like someone to at least try and tell me.
okay now it’s time for me to defend the statement that “destined for greatness” is a lie that comes from hell. the reason that sentence sounds so cynical and dark is because it goes against our culture. it goes against what the world tells us. sure, we would all like to think we are destined for great things, that we are bound to be great, be successful, and make an impact.
don’t twist my words. yes, it is a lie, but it isn't unobtainable. if i could rephrase it, i would go with “there is a path to greatness” or “achieve greatness”. the way these are different is merely taking the word “destined” out of the picture.
to tell you the truth we are destined for eternal damnation.
scary.
don’t shut down until you hear me out. it is hard to write about this because normally i would try and write about this without it resting on my belief in God or how i am a christian. the reason is because i like my words to be relatable and maybe you don’t believe in God or have a faith like mine and i don’t want that to be a reason why you disagree or can’t relate.
that being said i cannot take my faith out of this for someone out there to be able to relate better. i’m sorry. i can’t take it out because this statement hangs in balance of heaven and hell. remember the eternal damnation statement?
this post is for everyone though. for christians that share my faith and for those that don’t. it’s a hard pill to swallow. i can guarantee that it was just as hard for me to hear.
but i am grateful that i heard.
the bible tells us that God sent his son down to this earth to live a perfect life and then die on the cross to save us from our own sins. he died to pay the price of all of our sins.
how dope is that?
jesus died for us because we live in a fallen world. why is the world fallen? well because adam and eve sinned and disobeyed God. adam and eve were humans. just like us. we are all in the same. sinful humans destined for…
not greatness. destined for hell, destined for eternal damnation, destined for failure.
you may be wondering why. why are we not destined for greatness. why are we not destined to do great things.
its simpler than you may think. it is because we are humans. we live on an earth that has fallen. it is governed by man. ran by man. filled with man.
when i say man, i also mean woman too. sorry women are not exempt.
anyway. because man run the world it is clearly filled with war, lies, cheating, pain, hurt, anxiety, depression, death, ect. i could go on and on but i’ll stop there.
when man dies it is not over though.
i promise i’m going to end this with hope and not despair. hang tight.
let me say this. i am writing this on an eternal level. this isn't meant to be man’s idea of a life timeline. remember when man dies it isn't over. this is where destination comes into play. we die. then what. it’s not over. we have two destinations. heaven or hell.
remember earlier when i said, “achieve greatness”? that comes into play now.
it isn't good works, it isn't success, it isn't how much you helped out while on earth. this is simply about having a personal relationship with God. accepting the fact that he sent jesus to earth to die for us.
achieving greatness is simple. believe in your heart, make disciples of man, repent of your sins, and make the lord the leader of your life.
the reason we are not in fact destined for greatness is because the default of man is eternal damnation. we are born into this fate.
but the way we are able to achieve greatness is through God.
so why do we say this so often. why do we tell our kids, our friends, our students that they are destined for greatness. yeah, it maybe just something we say and you may tell me oh it’s not that deep.
but eternity is deep. this is hard to swallow because we like to sugar coat things. not just non-believers but christians alike. doesn’t matter who you are. we like to stay in the dark. we like to think everything is rainbows and sunshine.
unfortunately it isn’t. it is deeper than that. don’t play with eternity. it’s time to start talking about this. face the hard things. face the unpleasant. face the truth.
if you have made it this far, regardless of if you are a believer or not. call, text, email, find me if you take issue with this or if you agree. have questions? hmu. let’s talk.
